Up to our armpits in sick….

As the title suggests, this weekend found us dealing with a delightful bout of gastroenteritis – Isabel had first started throwing up on wednesday (as mentioned in the previous post) but that had stopped by the time Daddy got home and so we thought we had got away with it after all!

How wrong we were – after being perfectly fine on thursday, Isabel let loose (so to speak!) with avengence on friday and began throwing up at about 5am and didn’t stop all day!! Having decided to seek advice from NHS direct in the afternoon, I was told that I ought not to be starving her and that I could give her some milk if she wanted it (up to this point, I’d only given her water) – well, that was a stupid idea wasn’t it!? No sooner had it gone in, then it came hurtling back out again – and, it has to be said, was a damn sight harder to clean up than the watery vomit we’d had previously! Bizarrely, she did continue to drink the bottle of milk which caused a repeat performance of moments earlier and at this point Mummy made a mental note not to give her anymore milk until she was sure she would keep it down! After that, we decided to seek the wisdom of the GP – when we eventually were able to talk to him, he was a little horrified that we’d been told she could have milk and instead gave her a prescription for some rehydration powders……persuading her to drink them took a little bit of creativity on Mummys part but we did manage to get some in her – and even keep it there for at least 10 minutes!

She wasn’t sick in the night (thank goodness – the bedding situation was getting a bit critical!) and on saturday she only threw up a couple of times – we could tell that she was very unwell though, as she spent both days either lying on the bean bag or on her Daddys knee………..such lengthy periods of stillness are totally unheard of where Isabel is concerned! I think that Daddy would like her to be unwell more often if only so that he can have more of the lengthy snuggles – and if they could come without the vomit then so much the better!

Yesterday saw a vastly improved Isabel…….and a rather poorly Molly! It would seem that Isabel had generously donated her germs to her sister though, thankfully, Molly wasn’t anywhere near as bad in the vomit department! She was being pretty stubborn and refusing liquids of any kind – so off we trotted to the Out of Hours Clinic to get her checked over! The doctor agreed that she merely had the same bug and that lots of sleep would be the best remedy – Molly whole heartedly agreed with this and performed a variation on the London Marathon which involved sleeping the entire day! She decided to wake up as we went to bed but luckily she just wanted to chat – a sure sign that she was on the mend!

So now we are waiting with baited breath to see if Mummy or Daddy will fall victim to the evil germs – so far, so good though sods law says that one of us will be struck at about lunchtime on friday…………just as we are about to set off on holiday! We are keeping everything crossed that this isn’t the case and, for now, we are just glad of a vomit free day!

  1. Oh, it’s sickening when our children get ill, isn’t it??!!

Glad they are both feeling somewhat better now.
Think positive and you and Dan will both be OK.
